Saint Laurent Fall 2014 RTW
Hedi Slimane, man of mystery (he almost never talks to the press), has hit his stride with womenswear at Saint Laurent. It is plain to see what he’s talking about, and who he’s talking to—a girlfriend and a boyfriend, neither born much earlier than 1990—and his method of putting out that message has become relentless, convincing, mesmeric. Daring to repeat and repeat variations of the same coat, the same cape, the same tiny dress, the same low-heeled knee-high boots and glittery Mary Janes, and by putting them on an army of characterful, head-turning gawky-pretty teens, Slimane stokes irrepressible shopping desires. After you’ve seen your sixth, seventh, tenth variation on a Saint Laurent boot, it’s hard to resist. Same with the reiteration of the coats and the velvet Peter Pan–collared dresses and the skimpy sequined shifts.
